Dear friend of small railways

while sitting comfortably at my desk, the colourful trimmed christmas tree in view, I am thinking of the years
1980 until 83. That time I was cycling every year in spring about 120 Km from Frankfurt am Main to
the "Wasserkuppe"(950 m) in the Rhön-mountains. After stops at the source of the Fulda-river and the radar-station(summit) the day ended at the barraged lake in the Red Moor.
Twice I had snow and ice up there in 800 m elevation, so the long night in my small tent was quite frosty.
But the reward was waiting . . . . Early morning in the warming sunday-sunshine I pushed skips in the lonely forst
along the small tracks. And I took photographys. The railway; the moor; the frozen lake.
And I saw the changings. Nature refuge ! 1984 the railway has disappeared. With no traces !
The green barracks; the big grey wooden ramp; the rusty tracks: Everything gone.
As if the railway has never been there. But there are my photographys. And the noisy vibration of the skips
at the rail-gaps in my memory . . .
1985, again with the bicycle, and I almost drove by, I discovered another railway: the quarry-railway at
Herschbach in the Westerwald. 1990 I was searching intensively for small railways in the Westerwald.
From the white-clay mine railway "Gernbacher Wiese" I`m having many beautiful pictures today.
5 years later these railways are history as well. But there are new railways !
All over the country new (weekend-) small railways are under construction !
And they are getting more and more! And they are grewing constantly !

With technology from the last century running into the next millennium ! The new discovery of the slowliness :
The route is the aim ! Travel - don`t hurry ! Picking flowers during the train ride ? Possible again today !
Though - of course - still prohibited ! So we stay proper and enjoy the small railway ride without a flower in hand.
Now I wish you a lot of fun while studying the small railway track-schemes.
